Hi

I found this over Christmas.

It’s an ichthyosaur coracoid in shelly limestone from the lower Jurassic of Penarth.

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

A bit more progress. It’s really sticky this rock and hard to see the bone so you have to keep wetting it.

I don’t think I would have even saw that in the rock to initially pick it up. Good find and the prep is coming along nicely. :)

Thanks

I know what you mean. Normally the bone is red as it picks up colour from pink gypsum in the area but sometimes it just looks like shells.

Ive had to put a layer of varnish on the bone to increase the contrast with the rock. Otherwise seems to be coming along fine.

Nice find and Prep!

Now I know what a coracoid is :P Nice looking bone. That's pretty tough matrix, isn't it?

Thanks Roger. The matrix is sticky and contains a lot of shells but the bone can be nicely preserved.
