flipper559
Found this piece in a spoil pile, just the way it is, minus the dirt. Seems to be something, but I can't find any reference. Any ideas ?? I was thinking some kind of seed pod, or cone perhaps ?? Thanks for any help !! Phil
daves64
Since someone is bound to ask anyway, can you get a pic of the "stem" end please? Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.

TheRocksWillShoutHisGlory
Looks like bark with leaf scarring to me.
Roby
Hey Phil this one still has me stumped even after seeing it at the spoil pile. If the raised bumps were evenly spaced I too would think leaf scar. I could just be inner wood making it difficult identify.
Rob Russell
Interesting. Was it found in the Essex or Braidwood biota? Finding my way through life; one fossil at a time.
bigred97
Hi Phil! I have been away a bit as December was a busy month. I see you figured out the whole posting thing without me - great job! And really nice pictures, too. Congrats! As far as your find, I've never seen anything like it. It does have a bark-like appearance, but the overall shape is really interesting. @RCFossils @Nimravis @stats @Mark Kmiecik - any ideas?
Nimravis
Everything about it is weird to me, especially the color.

Mark Kmiecik
Not the typical Mazon Creek style fossilization, assuming it IS a fossil. It does look a bit like Calamostachys. I've looked at it every day since it was posted and I'm still scratching my head. Could it be slag? I don't know. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them! stats
It is strange. I think it's a fossil. He's got me stumped on some others too. Cheers, RIch
RCFossils
Definitely unusual. i have never seen anything quite like it. It could possibly be a pseudo fossil. I would not rule out some type of pith cast.
westcoast
Must be some form of Lepidostrobus???
hndmarshall
I say it could be some type of fossilized discarded cone type seed head
