Snyder Hill BLM area in Tucson

Chris Carpenter

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon everyone,

Visiting Tucson, AZ for a week and on the old Fossil Index it list Snyder Hill with 'abundant fossils', I believe the BLM campsite is centered on Snyder Hill , but having scoured the hill pretty well I am busted on any fossils. Am i missing something ? Is there a certain area of the hill that is better than the others? Is it a different Snyder Hill?

Thanks,

Cc

There is a chance that it MAY have been abundant at one time.

But if this is a well known fossil spot, especially next to a campground that is visited year round, it may have been thoroughly pillaged long ago.

I collected around Snyder Hill back around 1991-1993.  I found a few brachiopods and solitary corals.  I recall that area is Permian Concha Formation?  At any rate I recall the fossils being scarce and low diversity.  It's hard to imagine fossils were ever "abundant" in that area.

If you are talking about either of these websites ...

... I always warn people when mentioning them, that the list was garnered from old papers and journals. In some cases,  the papers referenced were written in the late 1800's, or early 1900's.

Time, weather, progress, construction, and ownership have rendered much of the information useless. It is a good source to start research from, but the sites may no longer exist, or may not be accessible due to the changes over time. Also, well published sites tend to be hit harder, and may have been played out, long ago.

Never did get a chance to check that site but I had heard it was hit hard. I will be in AZ next week and am trying to figure out a place to go hunting myself.

Thanks for link and yes I have actually. Just trying to figure out what to do. Do I go to one I already know without trilobites (my favorite) or try to find a spot with them I found online?
