Found this on a sandbar in Mississippi River near St. Charles Missouri, after the main channel was dredged. Appears to be a tooth but not like a canine type tooth. I was thinking shark tooth, maybe a native american trade piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated in identifying it.

Not sure what it is, but I don't think that's a tooth.

+1 for "not a tooth"

The articular surface at the bottom of picture 1, the foramen, and textured surface on picture three all point to bone.

This looks to be a hoof or claw core.  Im leaning more toward hoof due to the flat side.

Hoof core, possibly horse at that size and symmetry?

  • 2 years later...

To me it looks like some kind of horn based upon the bulbous end  and the clean smooth end break., maybe an appendage  that is discarded annually  ..I have something similar but without he bulb.....a bony grainy look, a flat side and  an arching  ridged side ....
