What did I find?

It looks like a piece of turtle shell. @Harry Pristis

As Harry said, these are pieces of sand dollar. If you zoom in you can make out the outlines of individual plates and hundreds of tiny tubercles where the hair-like spines attached.

I agree with sand dollar.

The texture is consistent with sand dollar.

Definitely sand dollar.

Well, part of one any way.

So, it's actually a "sand quarter" .... (*rimshot*)

Absolutely without a doubt, pieces of a sand dollar. Looks nothing like turtle shell.

So obviously you people that have been commenting on this piece that I have thinking it’s a sand dollar are 100% wrong, so before you post a response do your research, you definitely don’t know as much as you think you do,it was identified today thanks

Kind of rude, don't you think? Especially when people have shown you evidence for why it would be so.

Most of the people we have on the forum are very knowledgeable about fossils such as that one and questioning that in such a condescending manner would probably not be the best start to your experience on TFF.

+1 Sand dollar

Please look at the underside of a Sand dollar, even a modern one, and compare it to your find. You will see the similarities.

Despite your rude response to everyone who identified your fossil as a fragment of a sand dollar, I also see a sand dollar, not a turtle.  100%.

Put some HCl acid or vinegar on it. If it fizzes then it is calcite. Sand dollar tests are calcite. Turtle shells normally do not fizz in acid.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi,

You come to ask for help identifying your fossil and you hurt those who don’t respond as you would like ? Many here are specialists, even professionals in paleontology. Your behaviour is discourteous and very unpleasant

And yet, you came to us, here, looking for an answer?  :headscratch:You said it was identified. By whom? A paleontologist?

Only one person here identified it as turtle shell. And that member is young, and inexperienced with turtle fossils.

The rest of us have many years of experience (over 200 years, combined) with fossils.

Your troll-ish reply was unnecessary and uncalled for. Perhaps you should do your research.

All too often, a person posts a specimen for identification but then somehow rudely refuses to accept the suggestions given. Could  the moderators add a "rule" to the Fossil ID section that addresses this uncalled for response. Just a suggestion.  I do get very tired of seeing this misuse of the forum members attempt to help. If those that offer suggestions are slammed too many times, they will likely back off offering their assistance, which hurts me in the end , as I  need LOTS of help with my finds!!. I am very appreciative for the help offered to me on TFF.

By the way, looks like sand dollar.

The issue is covered in the Forum rules, which members have to read and agree to when signing up:

" Participants in the resulting social network expect and deserve a respectful and courteous dialog. At all times, remember that it is possible to disagree without resorting to insult or sarcasm; use reason instead. If you feel a derogatory comment or an ad hominem coming on, keep it to yourself; if you are on the receiving end, do not respond. "

It's  depressing (to me at least) that some people need to be told that rude or disrespectful behavior towards people who are trying to help is counterproductive and not welcome here.

Such behavior will attract the attention of the moderators.

You are right that I don't know as much as I think I do. That has nothing to do with the evidence. Look at close up pictures of sand dollars and turtle shell fossils. Take it into a museum and ask the paleontologists. My first time in a museum talking to a paleontologist was when I was in second grade. My "dinosaur bone" ended up being a chert concretion. So at least yours is a real fossil.

BTW, sand dollar.
