Now can you tell a novice what you’ve learned about stabilizers? I have a block of fragile shells and the like, my research hasn’t really helped me choose a product, obviously because there are so many variables. How about an epoxy guide for dummies?

Great idea for a guide, but I have no experience with fossil consolidation (the fossils I collect don't require it), and beyond using a bit of cyanoacrylate glue (a.k.a super glue) I have no experience with glues and epoxies.

However, I can point you to a couple of guides and papers that have been written by others. Your research may have already led you to the below information, but I hope it helps! :)

My only other suggestion would be to start your own thread in the fossil preparation sub-forum. Post some pictures of your specimen and ask about your stabilizer and glue issue. Many of the members who frequent the prep sub-forum may not look at this particular thread. You will get more responses from more experienced people. ;)

Mostly sandstone from clallam formation WA. The fossils are flaky and the sand stone has many cracks threatening to break into pieces. I know it’s not the prettiest, but I was hoping to stabilize the matrix a bit as well as some of the more preserved shells to expose and highlight them a bit

Did you mean to start a new topic as opposed to posting in a thread dedicated to a manual prep guide? If so, I can split out the topic.

as you wish, I was responding to someone earlier in the thread who asked for pics. Whichever you think is more appropriate.

Thank you,

Actually with as many preservation questions as we get i think it might work best as a new topic. It may make it easier for people serching for preservation ideas to find. It may also attract more veiws from the people with the answers… i like the idea of a guide to stabilizing and preserving fossils to go with the manual prep guide…

as to the o.p s question. I use different thicknesses of super glue to stabilize thin or larger cracks then use a paraloid mixture to consolidate most of my fossils that i’m worried about…
