Stumped! Is this biological or geological?

The black part of this is so smooth and shiny, it truly looks like an enamel. But even though it is somewhat conical, it doesn't seem to be a tooth.

Part of it looks very much like plain rock, but then the shape looks rather deliberate.

Oh I don't know - I give up. Any ideas?

Not sure, but could be a fragment of a mastodon tooth.

Wow. I just looked up mastodon tooth and looks just like the picture I found. Thanks! Dang, you just never know what you're going to find strolling the beach.

Looks like a gomphothere/mastodon tooth to me, as well.

Having a beach like this close must be great. At the moment I have to resort to strolling the forum and internet auctions (with mixed results :/ ).

This is the only time of the year I get the luxury of being at the beach. We come every January to fossil hunt, then its back to the midwest till next year :/
