Chunnel fossils

Hey folks... Here is a question that came up today at work.  Did anyone find fossils in all the rock that was brought to the surface when the Chunnel was being built?  Did any of you folks in southern UK and northern France get to have a look at these rocks?

Thanks

As far as documented, they used the sediment from the tunnel on the british side to win some land by throwing into the sea. Result: promontory Samphire Hoe, which is property of Eurotunnel Ltd:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samphire_Hoe_Country_Park

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurotunnel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Tunnel

That may explain why there are no documented finds...

Furthermore, most of the material would have been destroyed due to the tunneling-boremachine....

And at least, the sediments can be easily collected on the shores of the UK:

Nevertheless some finds were reported (rescue excavation in pleistocene sediments of scientific interest):

Thanks, folks.  The same guy who asked this also thought it would be great to run a slightly long marathon in the chunnel... slightly longer than 26.2 miles.

Eeek! I love to run long distance but I need sky above me!  That would be like going through the underground passages in the Lord of the Rings.

Hi,

I can’t imagine racing in a tunnel entirely ! I need to breathe and see the scenery. I do almost all nature races and practically no road races.

Is the Chunnel well-ventilated or clogged with exhaust?

I had the same question concerning running from England to France.  Tunnels are generally vented,so I iamgine it is also.

I remember going thru the one between France and Italy in 2011 (the one that goes under Mont Blanc), and it was noticeably smoggy. I don't know to what extent it was ventilated, other than those fans they have at regular points along the ceiling, but it was not very effective! I've never been thru the Chunnel but it's hard to imagine something that long and mostly underwater being ventilated better than that, but I've been surprised before...

You could try getting on a ferry and running on the spot :D

You not a loud to walk or drive though the tunnel.  All commuting is done on trains.

It seems that at least a handful of people have done it even though it is not allowed. They enter at Calais and then hang on for dear life when the trains go by at high speed.

We have an underground 5k every year here in Kansas.  Unfortunately, its in a salt mine with no fossil record apparent.

Hi,

Interesting. I guess you have to wash your shoes after the race. There’s no exhaust. It must be nice to do. $55 to run 5 km ? Here about € 5... But maybe it’s because it’s underground.
