jort68
Hey all! Just bought this piece at a rock shop here in Chicago. It was sold to me as a shrimp, the shop owner was pretty confident in this, but I'm pretty sure it's a fern instead. Not disappointed since I just appreciate the composition here, it's a super pretty one, kind of off-beat. Can anybody help ID the exact fauna? Thanks so much! fifbrindacier
I must agree with @caldigger because i Don't recognize a fern pattern (i have some from Mazon Creek which is the kind of amazing place i would love soooo much to visit). 1 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Mark Kmiecik
Looks like Acanthotelson stimpsoni, but I'm not a shrimp expert so I'll wait for the better informed to tell us for sure. 2 Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

jort68
Honestly this is amazing news, yet now my fossil collection remains solely marine. Making a trip to Mazon Creek in March which should round out my collection with some fauna (: @Joe_17 it's not dave's, sadly... I'm going to visit him for the first time soon too though. This is one on Michigan ave, pretty discreet, it's near the block across the street from the bean.

Hopefully the weather is agreeable. Last year I went on opening weekend and the ground was still frozen solid, so not very productive.

RCFossils
Agree that this is an Acanthotelson. Do you have both halves? The head is missing and it might be preserved on the other side.
Wrangellian
I'm trying to picture this... Are we looking at the back half of a shrimp from the top or bottom, as opposed to a side view?

The body might be preserved as a cast? It’s hard to tell from the pics. I think it’s preserved in lateral view, and, at least in the first picture, he’s holding the specimen upside down? jort68
I'm not quite understanding the orientation myself, and maybe I've been looking at it for too long, but could this be the shrimp's head I'm seeing? With an eye? Or is it just the body where it's been cut off?
jort68
@connorp It'll be my first, yeah! Have consulted a few guides and will be trying a few angles on the day. Hopefully something will happen for me and if not, I'd feel good just having gone to the famous place.

If those are legs, to me they appear to be on either side of a mid-line, which would imply dorsal or ventral. Also, I'm not sure, but they appear to alternate left-right-left-right, instead of directly oppose each other.
