setix
I am looking into building a project for my partner, and she loves the Stegosaurus...so I go looking at whats out there....seems like fossil dorsal armor plates are extremely pricey and other fossils are rare. I know many of them come out of the Morrison Formation and I found some small fossils for sale that claim they are neck scutes...but they are VERY small and the price seems ridiculously low for how rare they are supposed to be. Is there anyway to tell if these are real and actually from the correct species?
Bobby Rico
MrsR loves stegosaurus too, well you just have too. Maybe our man in the field (Tucson ) can give some advice . @Troodon
Troodon
Welcome to the forum. Stegosaurs have neck protection that is called Gular Armor. Your piece looks a bit like that. Have a couple of questions Do you have a locality where this was found? What size is it? Do you have a photo of the other side photo showing armor
ziggycardon
This is legit, I have one that came from the same guy where this seller got them from. These scutes where found in association with some cranial material, rooted teeth and neck bones so I can vouch for the seller. In this post you can find my specimen as well as a photo of the block with teeth and bones where these were found in association with. But the label definitely looks different and there isnt much information shown. This shows the actual size.

And as I said, I got my scute from the seller where this fossil seller got his stock from But I must say, I have bought fossils multiple times from the seller that has listed your piece for sale and he is a very trustworthy guy with overall good material. JohnJ
Members please remember this topic is about the fossil, not the seller. Thanks. 1 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

setix
So I received the scutes and they look really good! However they are smaller than i expected, which is ok...each one is about the size of the end of my pinky I would definitely like to find a larger example (or other stego fossil) to give to my partner as a display piece. Does anyone have some suggestions on where to look? I tried to find a list of recommendations, but I think that's against the forum rules. In any case I'm really happy to add these to my collection. caldigger
If you recieved several of them, group them together in a small Riker mount and give to her. That way she can display them.
