South Dakota dinosaur fossil/bone question?

Recommended Posts

  I bought this at a little shop near Deadwood (not the antique store from my other posts) & am curious what part of the body does it come from. The hip? It looks like there are bite marks on it too... I believe the shop owner said it was from an Iguanodon.

Well, it certainly looks like bone, at least a part of a bone.  It was obviously weathered out of the matrix for a long time judging by the sun-bleaching of it.  I dont think its possible to give a certain identification without specific details of the location.  Chunks of random bones are generally assigned to an animal based on general condition and predominant animal found in the area.

No Iguanodons in SD, like its been said need locality of where it was found.  Could be White River material, leaning against it being dinosaurian

There are no Iguanodon fossils in South Dakota,only in the UK,but it DOES look like an ornithopod(probably thescelosaurus) scapula,

but I'm not to sure to make a dinosaurian conclusion.

No Sir, Iguanodons are known not only from UK. :dinosmile:

UK = Atherfield

Belgium = Bernissart

Germany = Brilon/Nehden, Münchehagen,..

some others, too (depends on the definition...)

How expensive was it? The price might shade some information about this strange rock,

Titanothere for sure.  The preservation screams White River over Hell Creek.  I have seen many Titanonthere bones IDed by those not in the know, as dinosaur.  Because they are huge and from South Dakota.  I think we are looking at apiece of pelvis.
