I would like help telling me something about this full almost perfect fossilized shell I just found, and where I can see more like it.

I am not sure of this bivalve. But @MikeR may be able to ID it for you.

Weird optical illusion on this one: one image looks like the actual shell, and the other looks like an internal mold.

I was thinking the same thing

the optical illusion is cuz when Tim cropped and rotated it, he also rotated the light source.  Our eyes like to see things with light coming from the top, so we interpret the rotated image as also being lit from the top, which it isn't, but the sift turns it inside out.  Every now and then I see specimens illuminated 'oppositely' in professional papers, and things like green River fish or other specimens in flat rocks seem to be popping out of the rock instead of being in the rock.

Chesapecten? The pronounced ridges on the shell seem similar to me, especially if this shell was transported and subsequently weathered before final deposition.

This is real, and was dug out of the ground by me, found in a pile of sand we excavated 20 ft down.  Only transportation was from the pile to my car...lol

It's really beautiful and almost perfect, everyone that's seen it can't believe how nice it is.  I have done nothing to it, what you see is what I found. I felt like a kid in a candy store, was so tickled to find this.

I was guessing about the kind of clam it was. I was also maybe hypothesizing about how this particular clam became buried in the ground where you found it. The idea that it may have been transported at all seems unlikely now that I see that both halves of the clam are still present. You wouldn’t expect to find an articulated shell if it were transported in a current of water after death.

I'm not sure how many years ago, but at one time in history I'm told the ocean came thru that area, same thing in Kissimmee, FL.  I would have to do research but am told that was many many years ago.

Has anyone seen one this nice before?  If so where online can I research this shell, I'm not having any luck finding one like it.

Aside from it not being complete, I think this one might even be in a state of better state of preservation than yours. It’s a Patinopecten carnius from the West Coast of NA.

You’ll want to search the web for “Pecten Florida” I think that will start you off in the right direction

Pecton scallop I think. Like the Shell Oil logo. Nice find!

I found a big one similar to this at a dry land site a couple of years ago. I think I might have posted it in the ID forum here looking for help.

I think these are casts, but still nice to find though.  :)

I agree about steinkerns.

Beautiful specimen! Just south of you, Caspersen Beach has dredge material with these scallops in it. What you are seeing is the inside of the scallop. It filled up with sand, solidified and the shell dissolved away (steinkern). So an ID may be tough. But MikeR has been notified. He is an EXPERT on Florida shells. It does take him a week or two to respond sometimes. If it is the same layer as what was deposited at Caspersen, look for shark teeth too.

Thanks for the clarification. I always get casts and molds mixed up.
