St. Paul find

Eastonian

Recommended Posts

I found this specimen last summer in the St. Paul Stone Quarry in St. Paul, Indiana. I think this site is Silurian. The oval on the left is 1.5 x 8 cm. The one on the top is 4 x 10 cm. Lots of smaller ones. They're flat, not raised. Any idea what they are?

Hi Eastonian, It looks like your piece isn't Waldron Shale. The colorations could be mineral migrations or early concretion chemistry. They could be caused by fossil material used as a nucleus, or just mineral chemistry that just started at high concentrations. I enjoyed that quarry, but rules and safety regulations severely limited fossil exploration. Thanks for posting.

Eastonian,  I have seen these frequently in the Waldron.  They are a bit of an enigma...have not received a solid determination as to what they represent despite referring them to a Paleontologist at the University of Wisconsin some years ago.  Have not followed up lately so if you figure them out let me know as well!...Lol...Ken
