Roadside find

A friend found this on the side of the highway in James City NC, any ideas. I told him I didn't think it was fossil but I couldn't identify it. He only took this one photo.

Probably one of the mackerels, king mackerel maybe. I’m guessing a fisherman dumped it.

I finally got the story straight, it was found on the side of the highway in some PCS reject material.

Some good fish suggestions so far.  May also want to look at an aligator gar. They usually also have small teeth interspersed with the larger conical ones, but maybe they fell out of this specimen, I can’t tell from the picture. I have found more than a few fish skeletons as “roadkill”, so being on the side of the road is not out of the question. I think it may be part of a lower jaw.

Just purely out of curiosity. What does PCS stand for in this case? Wikipedia gives 17 definitions for it and none of them fit for my way of thinking. I hate abbreviations :P

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. It no longer goes by that name. It abbreviated it to PotashCorp and now is Nutrien. Most people use the name Lee Creek when referring to this site.

Hi,

Could it be a barracuda ? The photo is too small.

You know some cross the road in Florida. (to keep the chickens company) :default_rofl: I've found fish remains away from water many times. Probably moved there by predators or scavengers feeding their young. Eagles and hawks can move them miles inland.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Catfish ?

I bet fish crossing signs on the road get stolen more often than the ones for moose. :)

Its true!  Well, kind of, thats why I put it in quotes.  When I lived in south Louisiana, it was not uncommon to find dead fish along the side the road. They lived in the ditches and sometimes got stranded, especially after high water events (flooding).  Or they were left behind by fishermen.  I recovered a nice skeleton of a 3' alligator gar that way.  Very cool looking fish.

I asked my friend to bring the piece back in so I can take some better pictures.
