Safe materials- foam and museum putty?

Are archival-quality foams needed for fossil display?

Also, is museum putty acceptable to anchor them in place, if color preservation isn't a concern? These don't have any color to preserve, no deep blacks or anything like that.

It all depends on the fossil and your preference I guess.

I often use putty to temporarily hold fossils in place. But I have had some issues with discolouration on the fossils if used for longer periods of time. Some types of fossil can also flake. So attaching putty may damage it.

In other cases putty can work fine.

It all depends on the putty used. Some have oils in them to keep the putty supple.

Find one that is specifically used for archival purposes.
