I agree, if you have a bic lighter, you can try and hold the specimen above the flame for a few seconds, if it smells like burning hair, that means that there are still organic collagens present within and it’s not fossilized.

 

As for what formation it is from... I have no idea. I would recommend looking around where you live/found this tooth on the USGS geological map database map viewer. It requires adobe flash player, so you’ll probably have to use a desktop to view it.

 

Either way that’s a really awesome tooth! :D

The geology in my area is upper Cretaceous. However, the river where this specimen was found pulse floods and is like a giant gravel mixer. In the past and recently Pleistocene fossils have been found on the gravel bars in my area (mammoth, bison, etc). So it is very difficult to age by geology/context.
