RFausta
So, as per my post in the Trips forum, i had a great time getting filthy in new jersey. These are the specimens i just dont know. Concretions? Bone frags? Teeth of something (salmon?) (one photo includes bivalves etc and i know those at least, its the other ? bits.. wild and crazy concretions at this site, good lord) Nothing easily identifiable to me, and i have a degree in this! Any thoughts appreciated
Rockwood
I'm afraid most of these are concretion. The one on the left in the third photo down may be a belemnite guard, and there is indeed a piece of shell. It looks like a piece that someone will be able to identify. Parthicus
In the third photo down, the left piece is an Ischyrhiza (sawfish) rostral tooth, while the right piece is a worn Enchodus (extinct fish, the most common bony fish fossil at Big Brook and sometimes jokingly called the "saber-toothed salmon"). Sixth photo down, these look like "chunkosaur"- badly worn fragments of bone that will be impossible to identify beyond "bone". Big Brook is a great site, I hope you can return there soon!

I had thought it might be a sawfish tooth but it was soooo much smaller than the other one i found! I have quite a few random bone frags, its true. Some of the bits are almost anthracitey-light and i was pondering if theres any coal in the area.

Could we get a closer look at those third downs ? @Parthicus may well be correct, but the files are rather small.

Hmm that was taken with my handheld digital microscope, i can try with iphone later for more resolution. Edit: iphone pic! The not-black tooth has a distinct shape with a sharp ridge on the ?labial side and a smidge of enamel.
