Whitby area sightings

A couple of things that we saw on a beach near Whitby but didn’t bring home. The area was full of scallop type bivalves and a lot of belemnites. One section of the beach had a lot of what I have shown in the first picture, resembling tree roots or cables; am I right in thinking that these are trace fossils of some kind of burrows?

And what Could the second item be? It was in a large boulder along side a few small belemnites and was about 5cm in diameter.

That indentation in the middle of the second specimen reminds me of the muscle attachment site on the inside of an oyster shell, so my guess would be some type of oyster or other pelecypod.  I don't know what species are expected at this site, however.

When I first saw it I thought I’d found my first bone and that it was vert, but on closer inspection I decided it was more likely shell. I’d have chiselled it out if I’d been more confident of bone, so I’m hoping it isn’t to be honest

The trace fossil is Rhizocorallium - the specimens around there are really good!

I agree oyster for the second, Liostrea or similar.

Indeed; it was the first time we’d gone so far along that particular beach and aside from the amount of scallop type shells they were the most noticeable feature.

Thank you
