small CP fern pinnae

blackmoth

Recommended Posts

It is found in the same supposedly delta setting, together with plant branches, sphenophyllums, crinoids, and marine and non-marine shells.

any idea what it could be? I am just guessing it is fall-off from some fern plant.

The finest mark is 1mm.

Definitely pinnules of some sort, or their venation at least, but I doubt they can be identified more precisely with confidence.

I'm in the camp that this is some sort of Pecopterid. Pennsylvanian would be the right age. My reasoning for the Pecopteris sp. ID is because the mid vein starts at the base and goes through the tip. You can't see the outline of the pinnules, but based on the lateral veins I believe they would have attached entirely to the stem. This would also point to this being a Pecopterid.
