Another Enigmatic Whale Tooth from the Peace R.

Darn it, @Shellseeker, you got me started on these whale teeth!  I'm starting to feel a little like Jonah -- swallowed in the mystery of these long-gone beasts.

Anyway, I've found another recovery from the Peace River that doesn't seem to fit a common model.  It's a small tooth with an inflated root.  It doesn't seem inflated the way a river dolphin (e.g. Goniodelphis) is inflated and laterally compressed.

I thought for a brief moment that this tooth might be a cheek tooth to go with the odd tooth with the off-center crown -- which I had concluded to be an apical tooth from a river dolphin.  One or the other guess must be wrong.  Anyone here have an idea about the ID of this tooth?

I do enjoy going down the rabbit holes that seem to materialize out of discussions here on the forum. :)

Let's hope that Bobby @Boesse has some time to check in with the forum soon. I'm sure he'll have something to say about these. ;)

As always, Harry, some really enviable finds.

Cheers.

You know how , when hunting, you just feel that a certain type of fossil is just waiting for you under the surface, that a short time later , you find it... !!!!:raindance:

Well Harry, I had that feeling.  You have fantastic fossils!!! and you hunted the Peace River "in your younger days" NOT whale ????  Thanks for searching.

Did you see this photo from @jcbshark? Similar size, tip, root?  Bobby seemed to identify in this thread: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/100440-2019-florida-season-wrap-up/

I may have.  My thinking that my off-center-crown tooth is an apical specimen is based on the image of Isthminia provided by Boesse.  But, that doesn't seem to be the species I'm looking for here.  This newest addition is not radically inflated like the iniids.

Is there maybe a spot in the jaw where the teeth have less inflated roots?

There seems to be such a tooth (or alveolus) in neither my Goniodelphis mandible nor in the Isthminia image.
