PODIGGER
I have two items that I picked up yesterday on the Peace River that I am hoping for some help with on an ID. I am pretty sure the first is a whale tooth from prior posts I have seen here on the forum. I am hoping to confirm this is a whale tooth and if possible the type of whale. Here is the tooth - The second specimen is a bit odd looking. The image that flashed in my mind was that it reminded me of a boxing glove as I looked at it from above. It appears that it may only be half of the actual item. Some kind of tilly bone is the only thing I could think of. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks. Darktooth
For some reason tilly bone was the first thing that came to my mind before I saw other comments. Even though it doesn't even look like ones that I have found. I like Trilo-butts and I cannot lie.
PODIGGER
Thank you gentleman. That was my first thought too.
Harry Pristis
Definitely, whale tooth. I am suggesting that they are physeterid with an affinity with Kogiopsis, but who knows for sure. Probably a Tilly bone. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
digit
My first thought on your first pointy item is that it may be the tip of a deer antler (a tine). I find these quite often in the Peace River as well as the base of the antler where it attached to the skull. I'm not seeing the enamel or the growth rings that I'd expect in a cetacean tooth but neither of those would be present in a deer tine. Do some images searches online for "fossil deer tine" and see if they more closely match your item. EDIT: Hah! scooped by Harry! I'm not seeing the evidence for a cetacean tooth but then I've not seen as many as harry has. Can we see closer photos of that first item? Cheers. -Ken
PODIGGER
Thanks Harry and Ken. I just got a chance to get back to this posting. I am finding quite a few dolphin and whale specimens at this site, teeth, jaw bone frags and verts.
digit
Keep digging--we want to see what you're finding. Vicarious fossil hunting is what most of us are doing during lockdown. Cheers. -Ken
