More Scottish fish fossils from Tillywhandland quarry.

I have been fossil hunting at Tillywhandland quarry near Forfar Scotland over past few months and found quite a few fossils that I thought I would share. The first fossil is an Ishnacanthus gracillis fossil, which I have just finished prepping tonight. It is pretty much complete apart from the very tip of the tail.

Oh Here is another Ishnacanthus gracillis fossil. This fossil has a mix of spines, scales and a jaw bone complete with teeth. The jaw bone is really impressive.

And here is the quarry. The rocks here farmed at the bottom of a volcanic lake over 400 million years ago.

I agree with Tim. Awesome finds! Wish there was a Devonian fish site near us that is as good as that. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Nice specimens, and OMG you must be a very patient person.  I don't know if I could have resisted removing more of the matrix to see what else is underneath.

Impressive finds! Also a good lesson that classic sites that have not been obliterated by development can still turn out beautiful specimens.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the messages everyone! I have been back to the quarry a few times since I last posted on here, and I have found another Ischnacanthus gracillis fossil. This fossil is probably the best one I have ever found at the quarry. Although part of one of the dorsal spines is missing.

I have also found part of Eurypterid fossil as well. It is a shame I couldn't find the rest of it. Eurypterid fossils are to find.
