First Devonian hunt of 2020 in New York

Spring of 2020

We took advantage of the time off and the break in weather to hunt one of our favorite streams here in Western New York. This was just a spring scouting mission to see what was exposed after the ice and snow has melted. Some of the more interesting finds were a crinoid crown (very rare for this locality) possibly Logocrinus, Spinocyrtia granulosa open with both valves, Orthospirifer marcyi, a large Megastrophia concava cleaned by nature with epibionts, and 3 small nearly complete Greenops. We also found many small Favosites coral colonies, large Heliophyllum corals, and 8 different species of brachiopods.

Happy Collecting!

Wonderful finds.

The corals and trilobites are great but I adore those brachiopods, especially the one with Cornulites attached.

You had a great day.

Really nice finds Mikey. Congratulations. I especially appreciate your rare crinoid calyx, that nicely preserved gastropod (Naticonema?), and those brachs and corals. I'm pretty much confined to my home on account of this virus, but seeing your haul reminds me how much I miss collecting in the Devonian. I would love to come up there just to hunt corals. Thanks for sharing.

I especially love the gastropod-with-brachiopods plate - it's gorgeous!

You had a great hunt! Glad you were able to get out and enjoy a good healthy dose of nature. :)

I second @Monicas statement! That gastropod/brachiopod plate is a beauty.

I have always liked the twisty, turny, and wrinkly Heliophyllum so those are nice as well. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your kind comments as always. The cornulites are actually a crinoid holdfast. There are 2 holdfast on this large brachiopod. :)

Thanks Jeffrey. These were all easy surface finds. My girlfriend and I were picking these up and talking about how it was like finding Easter eggs hiding in the grass/leaves.  The gastropod is a Naticonema lineata. The crinoid was lying near a large brachiopod half exposed in the shale. You could see where the crinoid stem impression was but that part washed away. Happy Collecting.  soon I hope
