connorp
Found this small (presumably fish) bone fragment last weekend while at my usual Pennsylvanian (Upper Carboniferous) limestone roadcut in northern IL. Not really sure what to make of it. It's small, not even 1cm long. My only guesses were either a partial jaw of some sort, or maybe a small fragment of a spine. Any thoughts? @jdp @Fossildude19 @deutscheben
Fossildude19
Seems a bit weird for fish, but hard to tell - the "teeth" or protuberances look like they are broken. Spine would be my first guess, but it could be a piece of maxilla. jdp
can you get a better image of the surface of the toothlike structures?
deutscheben
The regular spacing of the bumps and the parallel structures along the length of the main piece make me think this is a piece of a fish spine- you can see similar anatomy in some more complete specimens on the Illinois State Museum geology Flickr account. For instance, here is one that matches pretty closely: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ismgeology/7376057970/in/album-72157630072880817/
