Arbacia improcera and other finds

I took a trip yesterday (Easter Sunday) morning to a few river sites in a neighboring county. The first spot I went to is a Pliocene exposure of zone 2 Yorktown Formation. While I found the normal culprits of teeth, mako's, hemi's and a small meg; it was the unexpected find that made this trip. While I have found fragments, I have not found anywhere near a complete echinoid there. Well Easter changed that, the Echinoid Bunny left me a good egg.

I found a gorgeous complete Arbacia improcera. A rare Pliocene echinoid, my first.

As found:

After leaving the Pliocene spot, I went to an exposure of the Eocene Castle Hayne Formation. There I found a few echinoderms, a few teeth which are very uncommon at this site and a few cool oysters.

Sand Dollars, Periarchus lyelli. However all of the specimens from this site are high domed

20200413_154156.thumb.jpg.9a18d222d36e05c1f3423bfebe7b51ed.jpg

The teeth. Top row Macrorhizodus americana, middle Galeocerdo latidens and bottom row Striatolamia macrota

20200413_154345.thumb.jpg.a1838cfb2a745053e9cd8f34dee36c97.jpg

Oysters. I have yet to I.D. these. Will add them if / when I get them. BTW, the pick in the first pick is 6 3/4 inches long.

Gotcha. I wasn’t sure if you used chemicals or old fashioned elbow grease. ;)

Looks great btw. Nicely done!

I certainly would never use any kind of a chemical on an echinoid. I would be to scared of damaging it.

I’m scared to use chemicals on just about anything.

You mentioned, first, second, and third cleaning. I wasn’t sure if that was cleaning, as in manual/mechanical prep sessions or chemical soaking sessions. Thanks for the clarification, and beautiful prep work. Cleaning that little beauty certainly took a lot of time and patience! :)

I am frequently stunned by the quality and beauty of finds million of years old.  Your find and preparation of the Arbacia gets that reaction. Thanks for sharing.
