Hi,

I would really appreciate an ID on these crustaceans found 2019 at Miami, Mermaid And Nobby beaches on the Gold Coast, Australia.

I've done some basic research and came up with Pliocene era.

Thankyou so much!

Hi Jenstar.  If it were me, I would go back to that beach and try to find where they are coming from.  Try finding them still in the concreted material so as to get more compplete specimens.  good luck

So many crabs casually found on the beach while in our Jurassic any crustaceans are extremely rare. Each of them would be the find of the year for me . Interesting how abundance of animal types differs depending on place and period.

Hi RJB!

The crabs are from offshore and have washed up after the area was dredged for sand. I've spoken to a few locals like me who like fossils and they said there were even huge shark teeth that washed up! So lucky!

Hi RuMert,

Yes, they were very abundant last year! I have hundreds of specimens! Some I haven't even gotten to cleaning yet.

I will post a gallery when I'm permitted re forum rules.

Hi All,

Thankyou so much for your help!

I've done more research and have a good idea that as advised by @caterpillar they are Podophthalmus vigil : Sentinel Crabs (Weber, 1795)

The link is as follows:

So happy to have identified my finds! :D
