Snake Head Fossil?

Recommended Posts

I found this on a beach in Northeast Massachusetts. The area was volcanic at one point in time. This appears to be the head that was a little squashed.

Tidgy's Dad

Just a chert nodule, I'm afraid, not a fossil.

Hello Sam and a warm welcome to TFF from Austin, Tx.  I'll have to agree with @Tidgy's Dad on the ID, but I can sure see why you thought it might be a fossilized head.  As you continue on the forum, you will learn to ID what fossil bone looks like and what the fossilization of previous life actually looks like.  Again, welcome.

Yup. Suggestively shaped chert nodule.

Sorry, not a fossil.  :(

Good material for arrowheads, though. :)
