Gully.moy
Hello. Found this nodule yesterday halfway down the landslip facing the sea in front of Blackgang, IoW. I cracked it open and was surprised to find these very distinct fibres running through. I cracked the bigger lump open this morning revealing a pyrite shaft in the centre. I believe the local strata are greensand formation above gault clay. Since the earth is so churned up down there, it could have come from either. Any ideas? Cheers! Gully.moy
What's not entirely clear in the photos is how much the internal cylinders protrude from the rock. In fact they were more prominent before the journey home in my pocket. They're very much like strands oriented in a particular direction. Not sure if these pictures will help, taken with cheap usb microscope cam. Incidentally I just saw a thread called 'Worm Borings', could that be what this is, borings along a certain direction? Tidgy's Dad
Lots of fossil burrows / worm tubes in the Upper Greensand in particular. That's my guess. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Mark Kmiecik
Resembles a sea anemone to an extent. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
