I have my eye on them, but I thought I'd check first.

First is labelled as a small carnivore Gralkator/Coelophysis from Scotland late Triassic to Early Jurassic.  Matrix is 220mm x 77mm

The 2nd pair is again small carnivore but from Hampton County USA, early Jurassic.

Thanks :)

Really? Mislabeled, complete fakes or not actually fossils?

The paint on these obscures any detail as to whether they are actually fossils or not.

You are better off finding some with either no paint, or with chalk outlines, rather than covered with paint.

Oh, I didn't realise the black stuff was paint, I'm guessing to highlight it. I don't like that.

I thought it was a natural coloration because most grallator footprints I see when I used google are darker, similar to this. So, all the ones like that have been painted to highlight the print? Or, worst case, to make it looks like a print when it isn't?

Like, this one, from a different dealer.

The dark shading isn't natural? It's been painted? So even if I bought it and it was legit, I'd have horrible paint all over it anyway?

Yup, i think so.

Sometimes the print may be a slightly different colour naturally, or it can be photographed at an angle to create shadow to show up the print, other times dealers may wet the print with water so it shows up, this being better as it doesn't damage it, of course.

Well, I have seen paint used, and oil or wax of some type.

I would communicate with the dealer, and ask if the highlighting is easily removable, and if so, how?

Also, ask for photos of the pieces before they were "enhanced" or highlighted.

The latest one you posted looks a bit funky, to me, as well.

This has got me so worried about buying fossils online because both are from dealers/sites with a pretty good reputation haha.

I've got a few footprints (UK ones, not Grallator) and this is the first time I've come across that some are actually painted--I'm confident about my others, I posted them on here a few years ago and they seemed to get the all-clear.

Painting to highlight though is a new thing I best keep an eye out for. Cheers.

Here is a print I found. You can see they are hard to make out sometimes.

Wow! Awesome print.

Having it highlighted with paint or gel, even if it is real, and not mentioning that it's being highlighted in the sale seems so shady to me.

Like, I'd much rather having looking as found.

If an expert with an eye tuned to the site identified them I may trust it, but neither set look all that convincing as track fossils to me.

Cheers

Seems I'll give them a miss. Seems like one to avoid.
