Xiphactinus Vertebrae?

Creek - Don

Recommended Posts

I posted this while back, but no ID yet.  I'm thinking this is a Xiphactinus vertebrae.   Anybody agree?

They could be from just about any bony fish.  Enchodus, Cimolichthys, Pachyrhizodus, ...

Not sure you could get much closer than "Bony Fish vertebrae".

I agree. Vertebrae not associated with cranial material are almost impossible to identify accurately. Even single verts identified as “Xiphactinus” with no other associating material should be labeled only as “Ichtyhodectid”, as all Ichtyodectid fish have the same vertebrae.

Thanks.   I will mark this as a Ichtyodectid vertebrae in my fossil collection.
