Wow! I applaud your persistence and patience!

It must be extremely hard work with a blade. Do you not have air scribes or is this a choice for very delicate work.

I imagine something like a microjack scribe would be up to the task.

Look forward to updates on this crab.

Hey Doctor Mud, thanks for your interest in my current project.  Generally, if the matrix is medium to soft I only use blades, drills, small plyers and screwdrivers.  As you said, it gives me better control on matrix removal and detailing.  I don't have an air scribe because I generally only do one "intense" prep every four to five years.  As a matter of fact, the last crab I prepped (photo above) was about five years ago and now I remember why.  I just can't seem to justify (to myself) the additional cost for an air scribe at my age.  Although, I have done MANY preps over the last 30+ years and on many occasions wished I had purchased one.  What is a microjack?

@FossilDAWG  Speaking of crabs, how is your project coming along on your three crab nodule auction win?

I'm not going to tackle those crabs until I have time, equipment, and experience with similar material.

Thanks for the update Don.  Just wondering if you had started on them yet.  I am hoping you will post photos of your completed projects, especially the most complete crab.

Gees, I just came across this thread and I'm green.  Nice job on this prep and cool crab to boot, especially with only using those tools.  You could always just show the abdomen on one side of the crab.  I'm curious what species of crab that was further up the thread that had the very spiny/sharp bumps on the claws.

That was the first crab I did and messed up the abdomen a bit.  Honestly, I'll have to look at my records and get back with you in the AM, sorry.

I've got to call it quits on this crab.  These are the last photos before the "reassembly" process begins.  The next posts will be the finished product, at least as far as I'm concerned.....

I woulda left it in there as it makes it unique compared to the rest :)

OK folks, here is the finished product.  I mounted the crab on a section of sea floor (not same period).  I elevated it some, this allows me to rotate the mount and see the abdomen and legs without the chance of breaking them off - again:-(   I also left the food in the claw and feeder because it actually when all the way into the mouth.  I believe it was feeding when it became "frozen" in time.  Sadly the antennae had to go, it was just too much work trying to retain them and they obstructed some of the claw and feeding views.  I am by no means a crab specialist, I did the best I could to make it into a 3D specimen while retaining as much of the original crab as possible.  Hope you enjoy it.  I have more photos if you are interested.

Thanks @Ash    I haven't seen one mounted like this before either, that's why I chose it.  I wanted to be able to see all sides as well as the abdomen without having to touch it.  And I wanted it to "kind of" fit into an ocean floor type environment for display.  It also prevents the legs from being broken off.

@DeepTimeIsotopes  Your wait is over, let me know what you think.

It’s gorgeous! The little stand to sit on a piece of matrix is a nice touch:thumbsu: :horseshoecrab:

Thanks Don.  A lot of work went into this project even though it may not look like it.  Something I don't plan on doing for quite a while.

You deffinetly have some artistry blood in you.  Very nice display.

RB

@RJB Thanks Ron.  It was an experiment to allow for viewing most of the crab without actually touching it.  I don't like the copper post distraction though which is really visible in the first photo.  I think it takes away from the "ocean/fossil environment" I was trying to achieve.  Maybe some of @Bobby Rico art skills/suggestions can help me blend it in with the background.
