I found this odd piece in a grey shale layer in a place with devonian age matrix and fossils from new york with various layers from flakier layers compact with fossils to harder layers like this gray shale layer that this one thats not as compact with fossils as the other ones. I am unaware of devonian fish remains from new york and I usually do not notice odd minerals in the grey shale layer so this this piece baffles me, these small shiny "scales" sort of reminds me of how the devonian fish fossils of the old red sandstone of the uk kinda preserve but other than that I have no idea what else to compare this to. Any thoughts on this piece will be greatly appreciated as I've never come across anything like it at the site.

Kind of looks like pyrite.

@daves64 Thanks for the pointer, I'll start looking into pyrite to see if I can find a match, I do see pyrite in alot of the pieces/fossils there but haven't come across it as flakes like it is here but definitely could be just that.

Where in NY?

Lower, Upper, or Middle Devonian?

I think some better macro pictures in daylight, without direct lighting would be helpful.

I use a free phone app call Magnify.  Works pretty well.

Its a dump site so Im unsure where the material was originally quarried from but from the other fossils that are found there I think its middle devonian. Wow I didn't think there was a phone app like that, that would help a ton now and in the future, thank you!

Tim - I downloaded that app and tried it. Just saves the normal size pics and not an enlarged version. You still have to zoom in with your fingers on the pic. How do you get it to work for you?

Dave,

I'm sorry I never saw this!

There is a slide button on the bottom of the screen when you open the app. You need to slide that to magnify whatever you are taking an image of.

The biggest issue is keeping your phone steady. I try to use a small tripod with the phone.
