Guess the Origami Fossil

BentonlWalters

Recommended Posts

My preferred medium of artistic representation, origami. Can you guess the animal it’s going to become?

Here is the base (the initial form) and a picture a little further on with the legs of a Cretaceous creature I’ve started folding from a 24cm square of paper. The model design for this one isn’t mine, but I have designed a model before and hopefully will make some more of my own in the future.

Hopefully the finished model will grace my shelf when I finally find one of these in fossil form.

I hope you all enjoy,

Benton

I should say that each leg has four little toes. And the hands each have three small ones . . .

Here's the completed model

Its a Pteranodon, complete with eyes, anatomically correct number of toes, characteristic head crest, and wide open beak ready to catch an as-of-yet unfolded tiny origami fish.

This model is one designed by Robert Lang, originally commissioned for the Redpath Museum of Natural History in Montreal. They have a near life-size version there with a 4 meter wing span. I'll have to go and see it sometime, I don't think I have a room big enough to fit the piece of paper needed for that.

The model not quite finished yet, I am going to use some origami glue (carboxymethlcellulose) to hold some of the flaps down flat and to define its legs and toes a little better so I will post the finished version in a few days.

I hope you all enjoy,

Benton

That's lovely -- and so much cooler than the classic origami cranes. :D

I may well make it fly once all the shaping is done, probably with either a wire armature or maybe suspended from the ceiling with some fishing line.

It's been a little bit but I finally have the gluing all finished, and I've quickly made up a little stand so that he flies. Here's the finished model as well as a few more pterosaurs I've folded of various degrees of scientific accuracy.

Hope you all enjoy,

Benton

I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt
