Found this in the backyard of new home in Northern New Mexico; matrix looks like PA Limestone of the Madera group, which is close by in the Mtns. orange stuff may be geothermal in origin, but also looks like wood. Leaning geologic. Very heavy. Thoughts?

Can't quite see it closely enough to be sure but it looks like Chaetetes (a calcisponge).

It looks like the sponge Chaetetes that has been silicified. Look for small polygonal openings on top and tabula crosspieces.

Interesting positions...Chaetetes milleporaceus appears to be local in the PAL...Just wish I knew more about provenance.
