Ordovician Trilobite Cephalon?

Recommended Posts

I posted yesterday about a trip I recently made to West Virginia to collect Ordovician trilobites. At the site I also found this piece. It measures approximately 1.25 cm. My initial thought is that it is some type of trilobite cephalon but it doesn't seem to match the trilobites that are listed in literature as being found at this site. Maybe a deformed a buried Isotelus? As you can see in the second photo there is this kind of nub that juts up and out that could be an eye, but I am not sure. I am baffled. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure this is Ordovician?  Looks like Mahantango Fm. matrix, to me.  :headscratch:

It is reminicent of Dipleura dekayi

You might try removing more matrix.

Maybe @piranha will weigh in.

@Fossildude19 Yes. It is Ordovician. The other fossils on the block match what is found at the Ordovician site, including evidence of Cryptolithus tesselatus. Attached see a pygidium and part of a lace collar of Cryptolithus.

@cck Thank you for your thoughts. Would you say that this is also a partial Isotelus? I kinda lean towards Flexicalymene but I wasn't sure. It is much smaller than the other one. This is only 7 mm. You can see in the second photo the beginning of where the eye would have been.
