Ammonites

Hi Everyone!

I have these wonderful Ammonites for about 15 years now and I would like to have their ID. Also an estimated value. Each of them is about 5 kg. and as shown in the picture,

41 cm.

Thank you so much.

Sergio.

Per our Rules and Community standards, the Forum does not offer estimates of monetary value.

These look like Moroccan Ammonites, with the typically carved inner whorls.

Maybe Mantelliceras sp?

Yes.  The inner whorls are frequently obliterated by extraction, and tend to get new whorls carved into them, to make them more sellable.

You can usually see it when you are looking for it.

Sadly, these appear to be entirely carved...in essence, paleo art.

Yeah, very much carved, but they were a gift and they belong to you so who cares what they are worth?  Right?

The point is the ammonite shell is not homogeneous. The outside whorl is the body chamber, which becomes empty and instantly filled with mud. The inner whorls are the phragmocone, containing numerous chambers and normally filled with gases to provide buoyancy. Most of it is often preserved in a different way. Sometimes the inner whorls fosilize nicely while the former body chamber is squished or lost, sometimes otherwise. If the inner whorls are not preserved, they could be carved. Another funny detail is that the shell often changes sculpture with adult animals, for example the outer whorl of a female is usually much smoother than the inner ones. So if you carve the center according to the outer whorl, the ammonite is double-faked:D

The body chamber is squished here (not all of it survived)

The other way round

IMG_20200421_155843.jpg

Here the phragmocone is preserved differently...

IMG_20200601_182243.jpg

....and usually lost, so you can fill the center with matrix and carve what you like

Thanks RuMert for the informative post.  I'll just nit-pick a tiny bit and point out the spelling is "phragmocone", sounds the same but "ph" instead of "f".
