cdardick
We found this hollow bone-like fossil in the surf of the Chesapeake bay, Haven Beach, Mathews VA. It appears to have a cut or tooth mark. Can't find anything else that looks like it. Could it have been broken or sawed?
GeschWhat
It does look sawed. My guess is that it is a dog bone (not from a dog, but chewed by a dog) that washed into the surf and was further eroded. Harry Pristis
Those vertical cuts (with the long axis of the bone) are very curious. I can't think why a butcher, ancient or modern, would make them. Marrow extraction is done by poking a hole or two in the bone and heating it. I'm vaguely reminded -- except for the vertical cuts and stubby length-- of this NA de-flesher. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
cdardick
Thank you for the insights! It is very heavy and seems completely mineralized. I took it to a local museum that has many fossils and native american artifacts from the area. The curator suggested it could have been used as a weight for fishing nets or for scraping of some kind (similar to the de-flesher). He noted that the edges appear to have been worn smooth, possibly from use. I'm still perplexed as to what animal it came from. The diameter is rather large. abyssunder
In my thinking, it would be an artifact.
