Bess
Hello, I found this object a many years ago. It was the first fossil that I remember finding. The rock in my area (Hamilton, NJ) is mostly from the Jurassic and Cretaceous, but there is a small section of Cambrian rock and a lot of glacial deposits. I found it on a path in a park, so it could have been brought there by the park managers. It looks like a leaf to me but I could be wrong. It also has a small indent at the bottom. I hope that you can identify it. Thank you in advance.
grandpa
Looks like the cross-section of a rugose (horn) coral. Note structure at base.

Fossildude19
This looks more like a cross section of bryozoan in a chert nodule, to me. 4 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." But the bonus question: What was the colony growing on ? I suspect there is the remnant of it's mold left there.
Bess
Should the mold be beneath the fossil? If so, here's a picture of the bottom of the rock.

Adjacent to would be a better term since there is no way of determining the paleo up or down. In terms of the photo (first), I see it as like being a cover that has been removed leaving just a faint imprint of the surface that the bryozoan would have been attached to showing.
