Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could identify this for me?

it was found in the lance formation,

and is just over an inch long.

This looks symmetrical, so it's probably from the midline of some animal. But I've got no clue what bone it is.

That is weird indeed...

I agree with it being likely from the middle of something since it does seem to be very symmetrical.

Some type of beak???

Some type of shell???

Also it might help to see some very close closeups to see what type of structure it has.

Once you start collecting little isolated bones in the Lance slash Hell Creek, you will come across lots of unidentifiable bones such as this.  But hey, it is worth asking.  This is a cute little thing.

Hi all,

thank you all for the replies! To me it looks like some type of atlas, I just don’t know what it’s from. I’ll get some closeups. I might also try a burn it to make sure it’s not modern.

It sort of reminds me of a segment of a chiton shell. That got me thinking about the foot structure of a dinosaur, and whether it could be a segment of the articulated covering going side to side of a toe (scale?)? Now, if one side is not concave the way it looks in the second image, I take it all back. Entirely a WAG, of course.

I think this is a good thing to look into.  I have no idea what they look like, but maybe a champsosaur atlas?  Or axis, I can't remember which is the haf-ring shaped bone.
