hokietech96 Posted July 9, 2020 Share Posted July 9, 2020 Hi. Found some neat stuff in the Lee Creek Matrix today. I believe most of it is fish/skate teeth. If anyone get help with ID it would be much appreciated. Everything is 1 - 2mm. Also, Can somone explain how to get of the dirt on these teeth? I soaked them in hot water and some of it came off. They are so tiny to scrub. What would be safe to soak them in? Thank you for any feedback! I believe these two teeth are Rhynchobatus Teeth #1 #2 #3 I think this is some type of skate tooth but not sure what type #4 absolutely no clue #5 I believe this is a fish tooth 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Is there any particluar one that is good for the micro fossils? I look them up on amazon and I would be a little afraid of losing something that is 1mm. ClearLake Posted July 9, 2020 Share Posted July 9, 2020 I use one shown below and it works very well for cleaning small fossils. It has a basket, but for really small stuff (microscopic) I just set a mesh bag (like you get for reusable grocery produce) in there and toss my fossils on top of it. Coco Posted July 9, 2020 Share Posted July 9, 2020 When I use an ultrasonic tank for very small fossils, I fill it with water as for normal use, and I put the small fossils in a small container, a smaller tank with water too, which I place in the ultrasonic tank. It works well and I lose nothing this way. Then I rinse the small fossils in a small plastic colander under water. MarcoSr Posted July 10, 2020 Share Posted July 10, 2020 I use an ultrasonic cleaner all the time to clean my micro teeth. That gets the dirt and most other debris off of the specimens so they look their best when I take pictures of them. However, you have to be very careful with fragile specimens. I've learned over the years what specimens are OK to put in an ultrasonic cleaner and which specimens could possibly be damaged. The vast majority of teeth hold up OK. You do have to be very careful with some specimens like shark and bony fish vertebrae. I stopped washing them in my ultrasonic cleaner because I've damaged a number of them over the years. Some looked pretty solid but broke apart when cleaning. If you have something rare, don't take a chance. The really solid micros I can clean as long as forty minutes if I'm trying to remove/dislodge stuck on matrix. I can clean coprolites up to 1 hour. I clean in cycles. If the water is dirty after a cleaning with small debris, I change the water and I put the specimens in for another cycle. If the water is clean after a cycle, I stop. I only put in for 10 seconds or less specimens that I'm not 100% sure won't be damaged. Again don't clean anything rare. I only use water in my ultrasonic cleaner. If I have hard stuck on matrix, I soak my micros in a chemical that can loosen up the matrix before I put them in water in my ultrasonic cleaner. When I use chemicals to break down matrix to be able to search it for micros, I always ultrasonically clean the specimens in water to remove any chemical residue.
