Opabinia Blues
Hello, everyone! I will be in North Carolina on a family trip for the next week, but I’d like to do some fossil hunting as well while I’m out here. I’m in the New Bern area specifically. Does anyone know of any good fossil sites in the area where one can collect? Thanks!
sixgill pete
There are many sites along both the Neuse and Trent Rivers (which meet in New Bern) but a boat is needed for access. downriver and a short distance upriver is tidal and can be collected at the right tides. Further up river the water levels are to high to access sights right now due to high water from all the rain we have had in the last few months. There is a creek in Greenville, about an hour and a half away that can be waded and sifted. It has Cretaceous, Pliocene and Pleistocene fossils. It is Greens Mill Run, a.k.a. GMR. Search the forum you will find many posts about it. There is also the Aurora Fossil Museum about an hour away. But the museum and its collecting piles from the Lee Creek Mine are closed due to Covid 19. I've found lots of shells in it, including some nice, large olive shells. Wilmington uses a lot of Castle Hayne marl for fill material, and I've found lots of shells, gastropods, and even an echinoid in those rocks.
