Trying to identify this for my dad (Long Island NY)

The rock is about the size of a large hand. I’m sorry to say I know nothing about fossils and we would be so grateful for some input! Thank you in advance !

It's likely that biological elements were involved in the creation of this substance. I doubt it can actually be called a fossil though. I think it is an iron/sulfur mineral like pyrite or something similar.

I agree. IMHO, I think the inclusions could have formed inside of a hollow burrow, such as Ophiomorpha. The remaining hollow space could then have filled with sediment, explaining the tannish colored matrix around the inclusion. However, this is only a guess, and other more experienced members will probably prove me wrong.  @ynot

If it shows up in the expected line of a burrow on the back side there is definitely a good case for it.

I agree. It looks like a geological formation related to iron concentration in diagenesis.
