niiku23
Hi, My Son found this on a beach near Dover Kent in the United Kingdom. We don't know what it is but looks like a fossil to me? The material almost looks like bone to me though. Thanks for any help!
TqB
Welcome to the forum! It's part of an inoceramid bivalve from the Chalk (Upper Cretaceous). The long, narrow, ridged area (top of the first photo) is the hinge line - both that, and the fibrous structure of the shell (visible at the bottom of the second photo) are characteristic. There are a few closely related genera that are possible - Inoceramus is one, and that was used for most of them once.. (Try searching "Inoceramus hinge" for similar specimens.) niiku23
Amazing thank you for the information! So it's 65 million years old or more. Lets see if this find gives my son the fossil finding bug! Edited July 10, 2020 by niiku23
