Devonian Double Whammy

Recommended Posts

I had a great time meeting up at DSR with @mattbsharks today. We shared the site with a family from Sayre, Pennsylvania, and the New York Paleontology Society also paid us a visit. I found some decent stuff but gave away some items to a gentleman from Texas, as it was his first fossilhunt. So I sent him home with some trilobite bits and pieces. We also went over to Briggs Road for a bit. I only stayed for a little while as the sun was getting to hot for my liking. Also got to meet forum member @Nautiloid and his Dad at DSR. When Matt and I got to Briggs we ran into @DrDave. So it was great to meet new friends as well as seeing old friends. Here is a pic of me when I first got there.

I also wanted to mention that the first time I met Matt and his Mom, i left a couple tools behind at DSR. Matt messaged me later and said that when he got back home he would send them to me. I told him to just go ahead and keep them and consider them a gift. So today he had a gift for me. A horse tooth and some sharkteeth from Florida, a couple Bakerfield Makos, and a couple, Squalicorax from either South or North Carolina. Thanks Matt!:dinothumb:

That’s a great Eldredgeops. Was that found at DSR?

Always nice to see members meeting up and friendships old and new.

Some nice finds, too, Dave. :)

It looks like you had a nice day out collecting with friends - very nice!

I especially like this find:

Is it a brachiopod or a bivalve?

Hi Monica, I had to look this up, as this is new to me. The closest ID that I could come up with is Eoschuchertella arctostriata. Maybe @Jeffrey P or @Fossildude19 can confirm this. Also, I believe this is a brach.

Correction, Bivalve and I believe this to be Pseudoaviculopecten sp. Possibly exacutus.

Yup, bivalve, but I think it may be Pterinopectin conspectus.

Wow. I wish I could been there to see all of my friends from TFF and the NY Paleontological Society. Might have even found a worthwhile fossil or two. That Pterinopectin is an awesome find. The only other one I've seen was found by Tony (Pete Burns) at last year's DSR hunt.

If you can make it back out this way, let me know Jeff. I miss seeing you, Tim, Mike, and the rest of the gang.

Nice Dave! Good company and good finds.

Your story about gifting tools to Matt and him returning the gesture with fossils is a good one. I'm glad your kindness found it's way back to you!

I was so lost in the hunt yesterday I did not take many pictures at all. And now those finds are buried under today’s finds from Briggs in my car. Here are a few Briggs finds from today, and I will do a larger post when I get home of all of the finds  from my hunt with @Darktooth. All finds found with the aid of my trusty tools from Dave. So here are a few of today’s Briggs finds.

What's the current story on Briggs Road?  A while ago we heard that the pit had been filled in and the site was gone, then we heard that there was a new pit (or the old one was expanded, it isn't clear) but the owners were chasing people off.  Now it seems that people are collecting there again.  So, do you have to arrange permission in advance?  Or is it like DSR where you can just show up?

Don

According to @DrDave he contacted the owner who has his name on a posted sign and he asked for permission and got it. The area has been bulldozed and apparently the owner will be building on the site. Until that time the owner is allowing collecting but Dave said just because he has permission doesn't mean that is a blanket covering for anyone else. He was given the impression that the owner would appreciate anyone looking to hunt there, to contact him themselves.
