My Daughter’s collection

Recommended Posts

My 9 year old daughter’s collection had outgrown the old shelves so we took a trip to Ikea today to get something more suitable. Though I don’t think it’ll be long before this one is full too...

From top to bottom;

‘Ice Age’

A mammoth tooth, couple of mammoth ribs and a few other bits

Purchases

A few things we’ve bought, including some fish, a nice display of pecten and a few teeth (plesiosaur, mosasaur, spino)

North Yorkshire finds

The best of our finds on the coast (excluding ammonites) including a lot of belemnites, bivalves and a couple of ichthyosaur verts

Other purchases

A potamon and a pea crab, a few trilobites and other bits and pieces

Ammonites

Nearly all found ourselves on the coast but a couple of purchases too.

Local river finds

Some rugose coral, crinoids, stigmaria and a few brachiopods

Hoping to add plenty of interesting new fossils with a week on the Jurassic Coast in August :)

Very nice! It is good to start while they are young. Just imagine how nice her collection will be as she gets older.

I like Trilo-butts and I cannot lie.

Very nice collection and display! I like the Lego paleontologist.

Do you happen to remember Ikea's name for that shelf? It's quite lovely.

Thank you, the Lego is another interest that she gained from me and I’ve enjoyed getting back into.

Certainly; it’s in the Hemnes range, comes in a range of colours and was £115. Didn’t take too long to put together

Some recent additions to the collection. Firstly; my daughter insisted on joining me on a work trip to Edinburgh recently, to spend her pocket money in the fossil shop there.
Her first Meg tooth and a nice shiny little ammo

Otodus Megalodon, South Carolina, USA

Cleoniceras Cleon, Madagascar

Daughter’s holiday money (and a bit more!) went on these ichthyosaur pieces.

Nothing known about the vert & rib piece but local to Lyme Regis

Ichthyosaur humerus, Watchet, Somerset

Any suggestions of genus welcomed

I'm really envious of you, I could never get my girls interested in fossils or any of my hobbies for that matter. :-(

I was always interested in fossils at her age but didn’t have much opportunity to get into it. My collection was never more than about four ammonites but my daughter found them last year and it’s just gone from there really. Now nearly every Sunday that she’s with me is spent on a beach in the Whitby area :)

Nice collection I do like the top shelf . :thumbsu:

Thank you, mammoth are her other main interest, she wants a tusk for Christmas :Confused05:

(might have to settle for a little bit of one!)

Me too but MrsR does not have that sort of cash. I really like my Mammoth bark collection, that is small piece of ivory from U.K., Netherlands, USA and Siberia. One more Christmas stocking idea this book is great.

So the collection has outgrown the shelves I bought a few months ago so today I got an Ikea Detolf to house the Ichthyosaur obsession; can’t remember where on the forum I saw the recommendation for this unit, but thanks to whoever it was.

The new addition looks a little sparse now but Santa already has two large Ichthyosaur pieces and I have my eye on another in auction

Awesome collection, i don't blame her for being ichthyosaur obsessed.

Thanks Liam, I must admit it’s rubbing off on me too. I daren’t tell anyone how much I spent on her two fossils for Christmas!

Are they in this thread? or wrapped up under the tree?

Got a bit of a shock when the paddle arrived as I hadn’t taken much notice of the measurements; it’s huge. Definitely not going in the glass cabinet!

The seller put quite a nice Ich rib in with it too so I’ve wrapped that up as well

Lovely display pieces! Thanks for sharing. I love how the paddle is so satisfyingly spaced out.
