Paleo sculptures

Hi all!

I'm an artist and want your input on an idea.

Im in the process of making ceramic negative and positive prints of the fossils I find, and possibly some other paleo sculptures in ceramic earthenware. As some of you may know there are restrictions in South Africa that make it difficult to collect and own fossils from our country. I have been in contact with various sources and have been advised that there is no problem if I where to make moulds of fossils on sight as long as the the fossils are not damaged or removed from the area. I am also in the beginning stages of collaborating with a museum in our area and establishing another museum in our area.

One of the main reasons I'm starting this project is because Ive started making these for myself so that I have more than a photo of the specimens I find.

Anyway, please let me know what you all think of this idea? I don't have any pics of the specimens I'm busy with at the moment as they are drying out, so nothing has been fired.

Hi Bradley,

I do make something like sculptures myself and I can not take for them what my time is worth.

Curious to see your pictures though!

Best Regards,

J

@Mahnmut thanks for your reply. Can you put a link to your sculpture threads here? Very interested to see what you do.

I will update this thread with pics as soon as I have some examples.

Just a side note. I realise that I could use other more light weight materials to make replicas, but the feel, look and colors of the ceramic earthenware is comparable to fossils and matrix.

But please do share your work with us here. :)

I'm working on a similar "project" of casting my fossil finds in glass. I would be interested to share ideas with you. Feel free to PM me. Perhaps we can muddle through this process together.

Hi Bradley,

I am not sure if part of my response has been deleted because it sounded to commercial or if I deleted that line myself.

I just wanted to say that in general I think ceramic replicas of South African fossils sound interesting.

What I do is quite different and in most cases just for my own collection and the fun of building it. I do use a wild mixture of handmade, bought and 3d-printed parts to make (or modify) scale models of fossil and recent animal skeletons.

Here you can see some examples:
