bthemoose
I found this small fossil along the Calvert Cliffs (Miocene exposure) in Maryland. My first thought was a jaw bone with teeth, but my working hypothesis now is that it's a very worn cow shark tooth (Notorynchus sp.). What do you think? BellamyBlake
I'm not sure what this is, but I don't see Cow Shark myself
bthemoose
This is along the lines of what I was thinking in terms of cow shark—where the enamel at the top is the worn down nubs of the cusps. I could be wrong of course!
Coco
Hi, I don't think it is a cow shark teeth. In my opinion the structure of what would be the root does not correspond, and what remains of the crown does not allow to suppose that it could have had this form. I’m not even sure it’s selachian. bthemoose
Thanks, @Coco! Cow shark tooth is admittedly a guess requiring a lot of imagination. I wonder what else it might be? Some kind of jaw bone fragment?
