Which fossil is the 'Mystery fossil?' In the middle picture, the two on the right both look like Calamites as the ID tag says (I don't know if the species is correct). The green thing looks like... a modern vegetable?

Thanks.  My cousin in Kansas who lives on a farm said the same thing!  Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes!

Yes, the green thing looks like a shotgun shell. Is that what we are really being asked to ID?:zzzzscratchchin:

Not really sure... :headscratch:

Yes, the green mystery object is the one to identify.  A shot gun shell does make sense.  It was at the top of an old mine spoil pile, along with carbonized wood and the fossil ferns.  Thanks.

Funny coincidence that the texture of the shell resembles the fossil so much, I would also have collected it.

Out in the field you can't think of everything.

I would suggest bright colored clothing during hunting season make the list.
