Just got into fossil hunting with my young kids. Can anyone give us any pointers on where we can go to find some fossils. Kid friendly areas would be the best. Thanks

You're not too far from the Mazon Creek area in IL.

It is rather difficult hunting these days, though. You have to do a LOT of walking. If you have mountain bikes, that will help, as there are plenty of trails in the WRA.

Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish & Wildlife Area

I also think there is some hunting in Kankakee, IL., for more traditional stuff -- brachiopods, corals, trilobites.

Good luck & have fun!

Thanks for the help Michigantim. After a bunch of research on the Mazon Creek area, we are planning a trip during the summer. We're hoping the bugs aren't too bad. If anyone can share any pointers on accessing the Mazon Creek area it would be greatly appreciated.

See my entries in the Illinois section. just west of South Beloit there are some road-cuts along Yale Bridge road (and many of the side roads)that are the Galena group (mid Ordovician) that have abundant rugose coral, gastropods and cephalopods as well as the ever present brachiopods.

I have a great spot! Do you live near Beloit? I also collect native american artifacts.

My site is a 350mil-450 mil yr old site.

If you ever want to meet up we can drive to the location, and i'll show ya.
