Really nice fossils and good report.  So much of NY state I never quite got to while there.

I have come more and more around to sometimes being happy just to get a good photo of fossils I encounter.

Thanks, Erich. I do find myself leaning towards pictures - they are much less of a hassle to store. :)

I promised I would add some pictures of my finds for the day. FYI I was on the lookout for small bivalve species. In my early days of collecting in Central New York's Middle Devonian deposits I was really into collecting all of the large unusual looking different bivalve species I could acquire. Once I had good specimens of all of them I admit I kind of relaxed. Meanwhile, I noticed that others, especially TFF members, were finding species of bivalves which I didn't have. I am now more determined to find as many species of bivalves as I can from that site. Meanwhile the faunal list from the Deep Springs Road Quarry continues to grow. The three specimens I have displayed below: Pterinopecten conspectus, Nuculites triqueter, and what I believe is Spathella typica are all new for my collection.

Sounds like a fun mission to be on! I’ll have to look more closely at the shells next time to notice the variety. It’s amazing to me how numerous they are in general at DSR.

That last one reminded me of one of my favorites from that day but now that I’ve dug mine out I guess it’s a bit different.

Fabulous finds!  I think my favourite is the hyolith - what a cool Paleozoic creature!

Thanks for showing us your bounty, guys!

Here's a couple more of my finds from the trip. They aren't new species for me but they are good specimens I thought worth keeping; a plate with two small Pteriomorpha bivalves, Leiopteria conradi and the Linguilida brachiopod, Lingula spatulata, only my second from DSR. My first I found the time just prior to this outing. Seems like I'm on a roll with this species.

Hard to tell from this angle, but it is either the bivalve Grammysia bisulcata, or Grammysioidea arcuata.

Jeff,

Thanks for adding your finds! Always cool to see what you will find to add to the faunal list there.  :)
